If the "iPhone GUI" you are seeing is the RF dialer, it means you are already logged in. If what you're seeing is the log in page, simply touching the user name of password field should bring up the built-in keyboard (with letters, numbers, symbols, etc.) on the iPhone.
Even on the RF Dialer, clicking in the white entry form on top, or on the ABC@ key, brings up the built-in keyboard. This is how you enter Skype user names, etc.
PixelRogue,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
I'm guessing that you are on a pre-2.0 version of the iPhone OS. We logged a bug with Apple a month ago about this very issue. Pre-2.0 OS brings up the numeric keyboard, 2.0 OS brings up the standard alpha-numeric keyboard.
We forgot to take the keyboard difference into account when we updated the login page to support logging in with either iPhone number or e-mail address.
I'll have the problem fixed shortly.

Fixed.
Pre-2.0 iPhone OS users can now log in with either their e-mail address or their iPhone number.
